Geocaching Explorers Discover Oxford’s Hidden History
Across Historic Oxford
From May 2012

Oxford Castle – Unlocked presents Oxford’s hidden history daily on its guided tours of the 1000-year-old former prison, nestled in the city centre. Throughout May, the Castle will be spreading its hidden history a little further by planting 12 geocaches across Oxfordshire with vintage keys concealed inside that the lucky discoverers can exchange for free entry to the visitor attraction. As the weather gets warmer and the population gets out and about, geocaching is the perfect activity for family and friends of all ages to enjoy together. As a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game, players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices and then share their experiences online at www.geocaching.com. Traditional Geocaching rules dictate that the keys concealed inside the Oxford Castle – Unlocked geocache can only be taken if an item is left in its place, thus carrying on the geocaching chain.

Oxford Castle - Unlocked is open daily from 10.00am to 5.30pm (last tour 4.20pm).
Visitors can book on 01865 260 666 or at www.oxfordcastleunlocked.co.uk

Oxford Pride of Place Project by the Caravan Gallery
Castle Street Square and O3 Gallery
Saturday 5th to Sunday 27th May
FREE ENTRY

Artists Jan Williams and Chris Teasdale have been busy exploring the nooks and crannies of Oxford taking photographs that capture the idiosyncrasies of the city as its residents see it. This new series of photographic work will be on show in O3 Gallery and present a fresh take on the city and streets that are home to some of tourisms most recognizable UK landmarks.

In addition to their photographic visitors to O3 Gallery will encounter A People’s Map of Oxford, a map of the city created by Williams and Teasdale. Members of the public are invited to make their mark on this large-scale map, that will transform into a refreshingly honest and insightful ‘locals’ version of your average Tourist Map. Visitors are also invited to contribute towards a collection of home-made Oxford souvenirs that will also be displayed at O3 Gallery during the course of the exhibition, and are also invited to participate in The Caravan Gallery Oxford Survey, all of which will ultimately form an online resource presenting a true reflection of the city and an alternative to the Photoshop’d picture perfect city of Dreaming Spires that we are all so used to seeing on racks in newspaper shops!

Oxford Castle Quarter and O3 Gallery are thrilled to welcome the world famous 1969 mustard-coloured Caravan Gallery ITSELF to Castle Street Square. Opening its doors to the public (please check the O3 Gallery website for details) images taken on Caravan Gallery travels and exhibitions across the UK will be available to view in this unique, welcoming space.

The Caravan Gallery have also been involved in the exhibition Here and Now in The Gallery at the Old Fire Station, a photographic exhibition of everyday Oxford taken by city residents (the exhibition in organised in association with Arts at the Old Fire Station, Crisis Skylight and Oxfordshire Artweeks).

Working with art students from Oxford Brookes University The Caravan Gallery have inspired a series of video portraits (capturing the personalities of Oxford) that will be exhibited in O3 Gallery, The Gallery at the Old Fire Station and Modern Art Oxford until 27th May.

Donning Oxford
O3 Gallery, Castle Street Square, Oxford Castle Quarter
Saturday 2nd June – Saturday 30th June 2012
FREE ENTRY

Prompting us to re-evaluate relationships with the city and to explore and stretch the notions of how or what it is to 'don' Oxford Donning Oxford this exhibition presents so much more than straight-forward jewellery.

The exhibition’s curators Tamsin Leighton-Boyce, Natalie Smith and Fliss Quick have selected artists for this exhibition on the grounds of their broad approach to jewellery making and the exhibition promises interpretations and responses to this theme in varied and surprising ways.

Often described as ‘studio’ or ‘art’ jewellers, the artists exhibiting in Donning Oxford encompass a wide range of methodologies from conceptual to material exploration. These artists use ‘jewellery’ as a medium or subject within their practice to question assumptions about jewellery itself and to raise questions and communicate thoughts about the world around us.

Neil Drury
O3 Gallery, Castle Street Square, Oxford Castle
Saturday 11th August – Sunday 2nd September 2012
FREE ENTRY

An exhibition of work by Oxford-based artist Neil Drury. Drury has been working as a full-time artist for nearly twenty years. Most of his art pieces centre on subject matter from the natural world, with a marked emphasis on flowers, still life, plant forms and colours as their central components. Recently he  has moved more towards abstract statements, serving both to refine and expand his fields of expression.

“I try to make all my pictures rich in colour, pattern and texture; I draw a lot of inspiration from colourist painters, particularly Matisse, Ivon Hitchens and Howard Hodgkin, and also the great still-life painters Chardin, Braque and the Nicholsons. I personally find the combination of natural forms, vibrant colour, and expressive line and texture a constant challenge and delight: it is a constant challenge to invent, express and confirm a visual idea – a process that never grows any easier; it is also a delight to create in the hope of achieving something lasting – some small expression of truth made out of colours and paper.” Neil Drury.
