The Swan and Castle

Oxford Castle is pleased to announce that it has secured a letting to “JD Wetherspoon” to open a new bar on the former site of the “Ha Ha Bar” in Oxford Castle to be christened “The Swan and Castle”. The bar is expected to open in time for the festive period. Jean-Pierre Morilleau, the General Manager at Oxford Castle, said that “the new letting represented the evolvement of the post-recession stage in underlining the Castle’s role as Oxford’s premier pleasure destination. The “Swan and Castle” will offer a variety of great value food and drink to Castle visitors. Oxford Castle Unlocked Review

If you thought Oxford was just about elegant spires and world-class academia then think again! Oxford Castle Unlocked reveals Oxford’s less well known history, one that is rich with tales of great escapes, betrayal and even romance - all within the walls of the ancient castle and prison.

Nestled in the centre of this fascinating city, a former royal residence, a centre of justice, and as the county gaol, Oxford Castle Unlocked exposes the stories about Oxford’s past that have been locked inside for centuries – a past that reaches as far back as 1071, when the original castle was built for William the Conqueror, and continues right up until 1996 when the site was finally relinquished and redeveloped....

Nobody's Prisoner

Trevor Osborne exhausts me. Lots of us like to think we work hard, and now, more than ever, we are having to earn our corn. But this man puts us all to shame. With multi-million pound projects strewn across the country, it is hard to believe, as the chant goes, “there’s only one Trevor Osborne.” Interview and words by Richard Rosser.... Read more here

Malmaison Uncorked!

Malmaison’s sommelier, Virginie Thoraval, visited Oxford’s former prison building many years ago as a schoolgirl and was so frightened she promised herself she would never return. New Man in the House

B4 meets Malmaison’s new number one, Stephen Woodhouse, at the “house of ill repute” and finds out how the team will play a vital role in the future success of one of Oxfordshire’s finest hotels. Stephen lives in Worcester with his seven-year-old son Jake, who is mad about rugby. Stephen was introduced to Malmaison last year and liked what he saw. Let’s face it, as anyone who has been to the hotel in Oxford would agree, it’s got style, it’s sexy, it’s classy and you can’t help thinking that if you had to manage a hotel, Malmaison Oxford would be pretty close to the top of the wish list...Read more here

Doin’ Time

Oxford Gaol finally closed it’s gates in 1996. It had never been the most attractive of accommodation for inmates and had even been condemned in a 1770 prison report as being unfit for habitation. B4 sent Mickey ‘The Monkey-Wrench’ Trotter, a recent inmate, back behind bars to see what’s changed....Read more here

Airwaves and Urbanism

Trevor Osborne is passionate about his business. He’s been a property developer for almost all of his working life. Once he gets his teeth into a project he says he won’t let go until he has seen it through. He is a ‘details’ man who believes you can never stop improving. That’s why he still devotes so much time to The Castle Project in the centre of Oxford. He ties in this philosophy with his thoughts on Urbanism - creating a complete community out of so many parts....Read more here
